9/11 a touching story

I can't believe it's been another year already! How do they go by so fast? I know 9/11 falls on a Saturday this year, which for me and many of my friends, means a very busy day of grocery shopping, gardening, preparing lessons for church, a day filled with kid's soccer games, birthday parties, hair appointments, home projects..... you get the idea. But if you are an American, you will not let the day go by without taking some time to reflect on 9/11 nine years ago. A day time stood still. A horrible day in U.S. history. A day that changed us forever.  A day NEVER to be forgotten.
I will put up our flag, read my book like I do every year, and this year I will be reading the Quran (Koran) as well.

For this year's tribute, I wanted to share a bittersweet - but truly heartwarming - story I found on CNN:

Nine years after 9/11, a photo provides some peace
by Jesse Solomon, CNN

New York (CNN) -- Judson Box has never known exactly how his son, Gary, died on September 11, 2001. But an unexpected find nine years later has given him a glimpse into his son's final hours.
Gary, then 35, had been working as a firefighter in Brooklyn for roughly five years when the terrorists attacked. He did not speak to his father the day of the attack and his body was never recovered, leaving the circumstances of his death a mystery.
On September 11, 2009, Gary's sister, Christine, was visiting the Tribute Center when an employee asked her if she was looking for someone specifically. She mentioned her brother Gary, and the employee showed her to a picture of a firefighter in the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel that had a caption bearing Gary's name.
But it was not Gary. It was a photo of Brian Bilcher, another member of Gary's fire squad who also perished on 9/11.
The discovery compelled Gary's father to dig deeper, clinging to the possibility that there could be a similar picture of his son out there.
Box scoured photo archives of the National 9/11 Museum and the memorial's website, which allows users to upload photos from 9/11 directly to the site.
After searching one night for more than five hours, Box went to sleep, physically and emotionally exhausted. The next morning, his wife, Helen, called him into the living room as he was eating breakfast.
She showed him a photo of a firefighter running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel toward the Towers alongside cars stuck in traffic.
This time, it was Gary.
"I was out of out control, emotionally," Box said. "Thanking God, being so happy that I had something to see."
Eager for more answers, Box contacted the National 9/11 Museum and Memorial in an attempt to track down the photographer. Several months later, the museum gave him the e-mail address of Erik Troelson, a Danish businessman who was stranded in the tunnel on his way to a meeting when he snapped the picture of Gary.
Having entered the tunnel before the first plane hit, Troelson was unaware of the tragedy that was taking place outside.
"Suddenly, the girl in the car in front of us got out crying," he said. "Then we turned on the radio and heard the events as they unfolded."
Soon after, firetrucks started racing through the tunnel, but a car with blown-out tires jammed traffic, he said.
"Some of the bigger trucks got stuck, so the guys started walking briskly past us," Troelson said. "Gary Box was one of the guys."
Box and Troelson corresponded via e-mail for months, with Troelson doing his best to recall the day's timeline of events.
On Tuesday, the National 9/11 Museum and Memorial foundation arranged for a surprise rendezvous between the men at their annual fundraiser.
They shared an emotional moment onstage. Afterward, they spoke at length, with Box expressing his gratitude.
"I think I said about 300 times thank you and God bless you, that's all I could say," Box said. "I think I told him I love you, and I don't tell anybody that."
Nine years after September 11, Box said he still feels the pain of that day. He doesn't have the means to make large donations to the museum, but has sought to promote their cause through his story.
"We need that in this country because too many people forget," Box said of the museum.
"I wish everybody could get what I got."

hiding

I've been hiding a bit lately. I tend to do that sometimes.
Have a terrific weekend everyone!
P.S. tomorrow is READ a Koran Day for me, if you would like to participate

sending love

Sending love and prayers today to my dear friend Tami. Today is Tami's first day of chemotherapy, and she's in it for the long haul. She is an extraordinary person and friend - as good as they come - and has a literal army of friends and family that would gladly step in and take her place, including me, if it meant her not having to go through this... but alas, it doesn't work that way. But even if it did, Tami would have none of that. She has the most amazing attitude about everything. She always does - and to say cancer is no exception is the truth. She's anxious to plug her nose and jump on in. And we will certainly do everything we can to help and comfort Tami in every possible way - from prayer and chocolate and music and chick flicks and laughter and shaved heads and flowers and cussing and everything in between. That's how much we love her :) And she has also been blessed with a very good prognosis, so we are gearing up for what's ahead, remaining steadfastly optimistic for the future.
~
So in the words of Tami herself, BRING IT ON!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

labor pains

I wanted to wish everyone a happy Labor Day and thank all those in the work force - especially all those who have the thankless, background jobs, which, when you think about it, is pretty much everyone. The backbone of America. The workers that in reality, keep everything else going even though they're not the high profile people, or jobs - or wages - most of us hear about.

So as I was thinking about something Labor Dayish, my friend Shannon forwarded me an e-mail that I thought was absolutely genius. A young, smart, disgruntled worker decided she had had ENOUGH, and decided to do something about it. Via the entire office. And has the last laugh too. I LOVE IT!!! Enjoy :)

To all those dealing with their own Spencer - or worse - every day, happy Labor Day!

eye candy

Not really candy, even though it looks like it....... it's PASTA!
~
Yup, I've been playing with my pasta again :) Actually, I've been working on more photos for my Zagg skins.
I'm really excited about how this one turned out. It really is pasta, and it's called "mother-in-law's tongue"!
I'm stepping into the "no comment" zone on that topic, because fortunately I've got a great mother-in-law -
(you may talk amongst yourselves in the comment section if you need to make some colorful MIL anecdotes...)
but I have to admit, I think the name is hysterical, and I've seen different versions of it several times now!

I am aware that it IS Friday (HAPPY FRIDAY!!!) and normally I would be posting pics of my beloved Sandpoint,
but since I've been barely able to keep my teeth brushed since I posted those snowy white pics last Friday,
(you think I jest, but oh, if you only knew!) I am giving Sandpoint a break. That lovely snow did get me through the week though, and this week as well. We had a few lovely cool days but it's back in the 100's again - OY VEY.
So now that the weekend is finally here I'm going to hide from the heat and hopefully finish these photos!

Just for fun, here are the lyrics from a song about pasta I used to *love* when the boys were little
It's called "Pasta" by Linda Arnold, from her Peppermint Wings CD. The chorus - below - was my FAVE:

"On Monday I eat manicotti, Tuesday tortellini,
Wednesday ravioli, Thursday fettuccine,
Friday cappelletti, Saturday lasagna........
On Sunday I forgetti - Oh yes, of course - spaghetti!"

(*note: no mention of mother-in-law tongue pasta...)

Have a GREAT weekend!
P.S. We're having tortellini for dinner tonight instead of cappelletti. I'm such a rebel! Heh :)

sandpoint snow

Ahhhhhh :) Please forgive me, but we've been suffering through a nasty heat wave this week, so for my Sandpoint Friday photos, I went directly to the SNOW! The first snow of the fall season, to be exact - the fall of 2004 that is.
I don't know how time flies that fast, because I remember it like it was maybe a year ago! We were so thrilled because it has been years and years since we had seen snow. It was raining, and all of the sudden the rain turned to snow, and we were like little kids - hardly able to get our sweatshirts on and run outside fast enough!

It wasn't a huge storm - only a few inches of snow - but enough to turn everything white and beautiful :) And it stuck around long enough for the kids to come home from school, and Daniel to come home from work, so we could all play around and have some fun!

Of course, they said it was really WILD for them to look out the window during school and see snow start to fall!
Our back yard looked pretty wonderful to me :)
Ah, here are the Mouse and Daniel having some fun :)
one of my favorite little trees, looking so awesome all dressed in white
Look at that Mouse! He had just barely turned 9 years old!
........ and Davy was only 13 years old - gadzooks!
Ah, this is one of my favorite photos :)
Hey, no laughing - we had never made one before! I think he's cute :)
~
Well I feel *much* better now from having visited Sandpoint and from enjoying some snow. Time to gear up for the day and try not to be a weenie about the heat. As long as it's not 116 again :/ But I've got diet Coke on ice and I'm not afraid to use it. So HAPPY FRIDAY and ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND! And come on back if you need to chill :)

oh MJ.......

Just when I thought surely I had seen every clip, video, special, and/or concert of Michael Jackson that had ever been made, leave it to my son Daniel to find this and post it on Facebook. And subsequently BLOW. MY. MIND. Have mercy and praise all that is holy! What an amazing performance! Say what you will about MJ - but if it's bad, keep it to yourself. An adult little boy/musical genius man who has never known the meaning of a normal life - and yet transforms before your eyes into a fierce, commanding performer like none other. He will always reign as the King of Pop - this video performance will remind you why. You are missed, MJ - but I hope finally at peace.
