tight knit

My son Davy and his girlfriend Val recently celebrated their 2 year anniversary. Davy... poem-writing, music-creating, sensitive soul that he is... wanted to do something really special to surprise Val. So a few months ago, he asked his best friend Liam's sister Elise to teach him to knit. That's right. Knit. Val had knitted a scarf for him a few Christmases ago, and he really wanted to knit something for her.

So bless both Elise and Davy's hearts... they picked out yarn of Val's favorite colors, and the hugest knitting needles I've ever seen, and Elise taught Davy to knit. And knit he did! After a day at college, between homework assignments, while watching movies, during Facebooking, after band practice, and late into the night. Nothing like poking your head into your eighteen-year-old's room to see him multi-tasking with a large pile of knitting on his lap. He was none too amused with my constant interest in this, but it was just killing me :)
As he kept going, he realized that his scarf was really more the size of a shawl... but that was a good thing, since Val is always cold and it's nearly as big as she is :) Above is Liam and Davy measuring how long it was getting and figuring out when to add the final end block of purple. Yes. I kept my mouth shut but I was dying. I mean seriously, just look at them - how cute are they :)
Finished! Is it so awesome or what! I think Davy did a fabulous job. It's huge, and cozy and I just knew Val was going to love it. And I knew Val would FLIP when she found out he had learned to knit and made it just for her. How many guys would do something that? I was really proud of Davy. And he said that yes, Val absolutely LOVED it :)
Oh, Davy :)
So Davy took off for Pepperdine University in Malibu, where Val is going to school. It was a gorgeous day, and being Sept. 12, all the beautiful, beautiful flags were still up to honor all those lost on 9/11/01. It was the loveliest, most touching tribute, covering the entire hillside.
Thousands of flags, one for every single person lost, each flag representing the country they were from. How beautiful is that. Beautiful and so sad. We will not forget.
Davy said he nearly freaked when Val's gift to him, were tickets to the Disney Center for him and Liam (nice job Val). Then they went and had lunch, and took a trip over to Sprinkles in Beverly Hills (man, they are Sprinkles maniacs), and they had a GREAT anniversary. Yay - that's so awesome you guys :)

  1. This is so lovely and I'm glad you blogged about it so Davy will remember exactly how the entire process went while he made this very special gift for Val. It really shows what a sensitive soul he is and the fact that you realize that and cherish it makes it obvious where he gets that wonderful sensitivity.

  2. Wow! How cool is that! It takes a real man to take up knitting for his sweetheart. You've raised a great guy there!

  5. I loved your blog!!! It's so refreshing to know that there are parents like you and your husband who are teaching their boys to be so thoughtful, loving and kind. I'm sure Davy's girlfriend must be so proud and honored to have such a terrific boyfriend. I hope one day soon I find an older man like Davy. Happy Birthday Val. Love, Tracy Z.
