So Frank Sinatra. What did you think about that? And Harry Connick Jr. as mentor. Is that boy too cute for words or what!? Now THAT is talent. I'd like to see Miley Cyrus and her man voice try to put in a fourth of that much mentoring. But the whole Frank thing was a tough one for me. None of those contestants are going to end up as crooners - even our lovable romance singer Big Mike is worlds away from Loungedom. I felt the challenge made them all fish out of water - kind of on purpose. I think some definitely swam, and some unfortunately sunk.
Frank Sinatra Week ~ Harry Connick Jr. as mentor extraordinaire
1) Aaron - "Fly Me to the Moon" - Nice job for a 17 year old who keeps squeaking by but needs to go home now
2) Casey - "Blue Skies" - Oh my gosh... poor Casey. That was so painful. I was mortified for him. 'Nuff said.
3) Crystal - "Summer Wind" - Definitely not her best performance, but I still thought it was simple and lovely.
4) Big Mike - "The Way You Look Tonight" - Loved it. Mike and his beautiful voice gave a great performance.
5) Lee - "That's Life" - Wow - go Lee! The surprise of the evening, Lee nailed it AND seemed comfortable. Yeah!
Predictions? This is going to be tough. Bottom 3: Aaron, Casey, and... dare I even say Crystal???
Homebound: I think it may just be Casey and Aaron may squeak by yet another week! :(
What do you guys think???
I love Harry Connick, but I thought this was a no-win sitch for the idols. they were not allowed to make the Frank song work for them because they had to fit into Harry's arrangements. They arrangements were awesome... for Harry, NOT for Casey. i would have enjoyed a Crystal arrangement of Summer Wind. And I think Casey could have done a bluesy turn on his tune. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteBob, you bring up a really good point. The Idol judges are always yapping about how the contestants need to make the songs their own while still paying tribute to the original artist... AND they want them to make the new version present day and modern. Well, the arrangements were beautiful but certainly not present day - they wanted to keep Sinatra SINATRA. Perhaps the worst injustice to the contestants was that they had such strict guidelines - they couldn't use their own instruments and had no say in their own take on the song. So in essence, they were set up to fail. When you think about it... it's kind of true :/
ReplyDeletei agree with you guys about the arrangements. they were lovely, but not really scintillating, current or original. i'm not a big harry connick fan, but love how he mentored them and that he played the piano. that was fantastic!
ReplyDelete1) Aaron - i just have a soft spot for him cause he's so young and i think he'll be a country star, someday.
2) Casey - he knew it was bad while he was singing. poor casey - that vibrato always drove me crazy. i have to thank american idol for even knowing what a vibrato is. i think he should go. actually, i typed vibrator - that's a different show (housewives of nj?).
3) Crystal - very nice and she never looked prettier, but where are those dreds not that it matters?
4) Big Mike - the best, but i bet he has sung that song a million times at weddings. i love his wife, she's so enthusiastic and cute.
5) Lee - ok, now he seems almost cocky unlike the guy we knew way back when who didn't want anyone to look at him.
i'm glad you're watching 9 by design. i love courtney and there's something meg about her.
xo, c
